Why Sell Arabica?

Red Diamond brand coffees are 100% Arabica. We use this statement a lot when presenting and cupping coffees with our customers. What does this actually mean? We thought it would be helpful to clarify the difference between Arabica and Robusta coffees….the two different types of coffees we deal with in the food service industry.

When you hear Arabica…think quality. Arabica coffees are the quality coffees of the world. Arabica is the more expensive variety of the two and the best tasting. When we talk about gourmet coffees we are undoubtedly speaking of Arabica. Arabica coffee beans where first cultivated in northeastern Africa but are grown throughout the world. The plant grows well in temperature ranges from 50 to 75 degrees. The plants prefer large amounts of rainfall and are usually grown at altitudes between 2,500 to 6,500 feet. Arabica plants tend to be a little more disease prone than their Robusta cousins making them harder to cultivate. They also have a higher harvest cost due to the higher growing altitude. Arabica coffee accounts for about 70% of the world’s coffee production depending on the crop year.

Robusta beans have a bitter taste as compared to Arabica. Robusta is mainly used in popular commercial coffee blends, espresso or any application where a lower cost of the finished brew is desired. While the cultivation of Robusta is similar to that of Arabica it has a much lower cost to the farmer. Since Robusta coffees are grown at a lower altitude (between sea level and 2500 feet) they can tolerate higher temperatures, are easier to harvest and they are more disease resistant. A bonus for the Robusta farmer is that the plant yields almost twice the amount of the Arabica plant. For our fans of caffeine….Robusta coffee contains nearly twice the caffeine of Arabica.

A word about blends.
One of the goals of the coffee roaster is consistency. Coffee quality like any crop changes from year to year and region to region. Coffees are blended to achieve a specific taste profile. We want the coffee your customer drinks today to be exactly the same as the coffee they drink next year. All Red Diamond brand coffees are 100% Arabica, blended for a specific profile. It’s important to know the difference between a blend of 100% Arabica coffee and a blend containing Arabica/Robusta beans designed to reduce cost.
